The Feilding Star, Oroua and Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1900. A BOARD OF TRADE.
The Hon. J. G. Ward is a statesman who cannot be charged with an absence of progressive ideas. He has instituted several improvements in our social system and is now budding forth as an advocate of a Board of Trade. In. a recent speech in Auckland he Said he believed that legislation should be introduced to establish a Board of Trade which would not in any way interfere with the Chambers of Commerce. The latter are of much assistance to the mercantile community in particular, and of some advantage to the general public in various ways which it is not necessary to deal with here. But a Board of Trade established on a similar model to that in existence in England could do much. good. Its functions would include all trade matters — including shipping, banking, etc., and the collection of statistical information. By carefully watching and fostering our colonial trades and industries much good would result, and it is to be hoped the Minister will succeed in putting his ideas into a concrete form, and that an enactment bearing on the subject will be placet!.' on the Statute books next session. . *
