A STUBBORN DEFENCE.
DESOLATING OF PEKIN. WANTON DESTRUCTION OF HOUSES. HUNDREDS OF ACRES BURNED. HoNa Kong, August 30. The defence of the Legations is comparable to that of the Lucknow Residency. The aspect of Pekin is one of absolute desolation. Legation street is unrecognisable. Foreigners' houses have been burned, riddled with shell or blown up. Mere fragments of the French Legation are standing. One wall of this Legation was undermined and exploded. Only fragments of the boundary walls of the Italian Legation remain. Hundreds of acres of native houses have been burned, tho destruction being wauton Where they were not burned the buildings were demolished. From tbe top of the city wall a marvellous sight is presented shewing barricades which were erected every twenty yards in the thoroughfares, while underground shelters are littered with discarded uniforms, cartridges, rifles and spears. Adelaide, This Day A cable received announced the safe arrival at Shanghai of the Reverends AUardyke and Hussell and wife, who were amongst ihe beseiged in Pekiu.
