The Daily News states a sensation was caused by the Boers taking preliminary steps to remove their women and childreti from Johannesburg. A large commando hoisted the white bag at Dreifontem in order to escape from the effect of the British artillery tire. While they were rctreaing across the open veldt, with a squadron of cavalry hovering on their flank the British troops advanced, whereupon another section of the enemy volleyed repeatedly, wounding a number of men. The following are the British losses to date:- killed, 2419; wounded 8747 ; missing. 8482 ; died of disease, 1029. Field- Marshall Lord Roberts is now within twenty miles of Bl.iemfontcin. The Presidents' ovcrtntcs represent that British territory was occupied strategically and defensively, and the loyalty of the Colonial Dutch was unshaken, and as Bri.idh prestige is re-established, they claim their independence and an amnesty for the loyalists. Thu war was one of con juest, and they resisted to the uttermost. The Boer prisoners ailirm that the siege of M.ifeking has been nised.
