Mr Leth bridge at Mangaweka
o Mr Lethbridge addressed a crowded meeting in the Assembly Hall on Saturday last, and was well received, his remarks being continually "applauded. Mr J. Johnston presided, and bespoke a fair hearing. The . candidate spoke on the general, and local topics, dealing especially with the North Island Trunk Railway, Loans to Local Bodies Act, Lands for Settlement Act, Land Valuations, Workers Compensation Act, Manawatu Railway, and the Liberal measures passed by the present Opposition' party ; also the Trunk Act and the Arbitration and Conciliation Acts, both of which we're jeered at by the present party in power. He also dealt with the Education Act, One Man One Vote, etc. In reply to Mr Clayton, Mr Lethbridge said (1) The reduction in interest for the loans to local bodies was retror 9peetive and loans at' present in existr ance could be converted and a large saving made in interest. (2) The GoV I eminent bad promised to make the permanent bridge before the railway | was completed, that is in about eighteen months time. In reply to Mr Elliot Mr Lethbridge considered the existing licensing law as liberal ;. he was not in favour of an export duty on timber as the timber would only be otherwise wasted. In answer to Mr Woolnorthe he believed in intercolonial freefcrade, bat he considered federation too big a price to pay for it. Mr "Hart proposed a vote of thanks and confidence but on the suggestion of the candidate this was amended in favor of a vote of thanks only which was carried by acclamation. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting. •;
