« (Per Press Association.) Wellington, January 13. The deaths are announced to-day of Edward Whiting, an old settler and well-known builder, aged 70, and John Griffiths, late chief engineer of the steamer Herald, aged 61. Mrs Butemeut, wife of Dr. Butement, of Masterton, died there rather suddenly to-day. Deceased was confined of twins on Monday. Westtury, an employe of Gibbons and Co., seedsmen, who was kicked by a horse a couple of days since, and the woman Jessie Hay, wbo was burnt at Kereru. lie in the hospital in a critical condition. An attempt was made to day to fire the Wairarapa Dairy Company's premises Cuba street, btst the damage was only slight. A singular coincidence is that about this same time last year and about the same hour in the morning a similar but unsuccessful attempt was made. Miss Pheohe Seddon, second daughter of the Premier, was married at St. Paul's Cliurch tbis sfternoon to Mr F. Dyer, son of the late Joseph Dyer, first resisent secretary in this colony of the A.M.P. Society. This Day. Pat McLauchlan, night watchman on the ship Euterpe was found drowned alongside tbe vossel tbis morning. When last seen ot 1.45 a.m. he was quite sober. The cause of the accident is not known. Christchurch, January 13. The Ruapehu was docked to day. It was found that the hall was not even marked, but that a few rivets were gone ; from the stern post. It is supposed they i were shaken out when the vessel was being towed. At a meeting of the underwriters cons vened for next month at Dunedin fresh suggestions submitted during the year wnl receive consideration. The balancei sheet was adopted. Messrs A. G. Hori ton, Thos. Russell and Robert Rose were ; unanimously re-elected directors.
