The Half-Holiday.
(Per Press Association). Gisborne, May 8. Messrs Rees and Finn, on behalf of the Bbopkeepers, raised the point that as the Act did not come into operation till the Ist January, 1895, the words in clause 9 stating that the day on which shops shall be closed shall be appointed by local authority •' in the month of January next," referred to January, 1896. They quoted a strong case — Richardson v. WeBride, Law Reports, 8, Queen's Bench, page 119— in support of this The Magistrate said this point would affect the whole colony, and was one which it would rest with tbe Supreme Court to decide. Mr Rees said a case for appeal would be speedily drawn up.
