Catholics looked hopefully to the issue, but they were not active disputants in the matter, and whatever the outcome might be he was certain many Anglicans were yearning for union with Rome. They had adopted Roman Catholic practices and devotions to such an extent that a stranger entering an Anglican church fonnd it difficult to distinguish the counterfeit from the real. They felt the inconsistency in being so near and yet so far from Catholics.
