Pohangina Notes.

[from oub own cobbespondent. i A petition to the Harbour Board asking that the remainder of the sections in the township and suburbs be sold, is being largely signed Those wishing to sign it should call on the schoolmaster, who has charge of the petition for the present. During the recent flood the main drain in the township was greatly damaged, and since then men have been employed in repairing the damage. The ratepayers thinking these repairs a waste of money and considering that it would have been more adyisable to divert the water along the back of the town at once, as is proposed to be done under the loan proposal, requisitioned the Councillor for the Riding Mr Selby, to call a public meeting to lay the proposals for drainage before the ratepayers. Mr Selby accordingly called a meeting for Saturday last and a very large number of ratepayers rolled up. Mr Welsh was voted to the chair, and after he explained the object of the meeting, called on the Councillor to explain his scheme. Mr Selby said he proposed to ask the Council to advance sufficient money to block the present drain and divert the water into Kuku-street, and then into the swamp, until the loan money was available to complete the work ; also to cut a 6inall drain along the back of the schoolgrounds towards Weka-street. The Councillor pledged himself to do his utmost to have this work carried out at once. In reply to questions, Mr Selby said that he did not know to what extent the engineer was allowed to spend money in repairing works ; that tie did not know who authorised arrangements to be made for constructing a pile bridge on the mam road ; that he approved of the repairing works at present being done on the drain ; that this work (repairs) would be paid for out of monies set aside for repairs. Considerable discussion took place on the whole question and ultimately it was resolved :— That this meeting of ratepayers considers that the present drain down Moa Road should be blocked, and that drains should be made at once to carry the water right and left of the Moa Road according to the drainage scheme under the Loan proposal. That the Councillor ascertain what amount of money the Engineer is authorised to spend on repairs without the special sanction of the Council, and what amount has been spent in repairing the drain down Moa Road. That this meeting objects to money bein.q spent on a drain, which ratepayers require to be filled up. It was arranged that all those present should wait on the Council at their next meeting in support of the above resolutions The meeting closed with the usual votes of thanks. Don't forget the concert and dance on Friday next.
