Some time ago a wealthy lady left a bequest for the poor and sick of Pola, but the trustees to whom the money was entrusted excluded Jews from participation in the bequest, on the grounds that legally the latter were not included in the term "human beings." The matter was referred to the Appeal Court, which reversed the decision of the trustees, and included the Jews on the grounds of ancient law.
