How Tarcoola Won the Cup.
Near the finish of the Melbourne Cap Carnage was ahead, and according to " Verax " the roar of the people could bo heard a mile array. Suddenly there was a pause in the roll of human thunder ; a hush seemed to have spread over the great crowd, and they were almost stricken dumb with amasement, What was this spotted jacket dashing out in the ccntro and bearing down with a ter» rible rush on the favorite ? It reminded one of Bravo's great run, only instead of black and yellow diamonds they were blue and yellow. Another roar — this time from the strong-lunged bookmakers. Here was a rank outsider dropping from the clouds and coming to their rescue. An angry challenge was hurled back at tbem from the crowd, who cried : " Car« nage 2 Carnage !" until they were hoarse. " Tarcoola ! Tarcoola I" yelled the layers. There could be no mistake about it; a fifty to one chance catching Carnage at every stride. Would the favorite last it out? Would the gallant Derby winner pet home, earn the double crown, and shako the King as it had never been shaken for years ? Thousands of pounds hung, as it were, suspended on the result for a brief moment. Was fortune to faror backers, or were the layers to fleece the lamb once more? The terrible strain of those few brief momonts .' Will it ever be forgotten by those who backed Carnage and saw victory snatched from them in tho last stride? On they came, neak and neck, Carnage and Tarcoola, but yet another surprise was in store. Jeweller, the non-stayer— Jeweller, tho defeated in the Caulfleld Cup and at Mooney Valley! What about him? Jeweller came down on tho leaders with a swoop, that had it been a moment sooner would have won the Cup of '93 without a doubt. But the run was too late ; for amidst the roar of thousands of voices Tarccola had beaten Carnage by a short half-length, while Jeweller was only half a head behind the Derby winner.
