The Feilding Star. Published Daily. FRIDAY, NOV. 17, 1893. MR SCOBIE MACKENZIE.
In his speech at Palmerston (South), Mr Scobie McKenzie made a scathing attack on the Ministry, aud the manner in which they had mismanaged the affairs of the colony during their three years of office. He said when they came into power we were then just emerging out of a long period of depression, and suffering, and selfdenial. Before the present Government came in our exports were mounting rapidly, our finances had been secured, we had the first of our surpluses, and prosperity was before us. Now the labor market was almost closed, enterprise dead, not a soul would invest a penny. If men had not got work from the Government the position last winter would have been appalling. That was the result of three years quackeries. It was high time to return to a normal and healthy course of political life again. This was a heavy indictment but the experiences of every day tell us how absolutely true it was. Of course the release of money caused by the wool sales, has aiibided some temporary relief already to the general depression, but we fear that that will only be evanescent. The only way to restore confidence and a degree of prosperity is by such a change in the Government of the colony as will ensure a reduction of taxation on the necessaries of life.
