Scarlet fever, almost amounting to epedimic proportions is prevalent in the metropolis. By rigid economy the Government hope to effect a saying which will equal the shortage in the revenue for the year. The Messagerie3 Maritime Company have Receded to a request to extend their Island steam service so as to include the New Hebrides. The steam collier Hilda struck on a reef off Port Hacking. She was coal laden and going full speed at the time. The vessel sank in two minutes. The crew were saved. Mklbouhnk, July 21. Enquiries in connection with the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have led to show that the power of the official receiver appointed in London does not extend to the Colonies. The Company's new business is being conducted by the New Zealand Land Association, and the old business and contracts are to be transacted as heretofore by the Company's own officers. The greatest floods|Biace 1852 are reported along Launceston line. People in the low lands of Longford were compelled to leave their residences. The loss of stock is very heavy.
