TiHARiT, February 15. An old settler, John Higgs, 70 years old, dropped dead in his paddock to-night, while engaged in driving cows home. He had been suffering for some time from heart disease. Christchurch, February 15. At the adjourned inquest on the young man named Jordon, who died in the hospital on Thursday last, it was shown that arsenic had been discovered in the contents of the stomach and a box of " Bough on Bats " was found in the house where he resided. The verdict returned was " Death from taking poison while temporarily insane." February 17. It is announced that the Lodge Greytown No. 1720, E.C , has joined the Ma« sonic Grand Lodge of New Zealand, which has now 79 lodges under its jurisdiction. Auckland, February 16. For the four weeks ended Saturday, during whjch time an average of thirtyseven stampers were employed, the Waihi Company crushed 1Q73 tons for a return of bullion valued at £-3000 r The stuff crushed was all quarried from the surface of the mine, in order to clear as much ground as possible during the fine weather. February 17. A telegraph linesman named Cross has been temporarily suspended from duty until a charge or mutilation of Ins horse has been heard. Cross has been for nearly 38 years in the Government, nnd stood well in the esteem of the officers of the department. A native woman who fell into a boiling spring at Whakare Warea. a few days ago, has died from the effects of the scalding. A resident of Mount Eoskill. Mrs Ellen Paiterson, was found dead to«day at Mount Eden, at the house of a friend whom she was visiting. Death is attributed to heart disease. Masterton, February 16. William Lancaster Lucemi died very suddenly here last night from effusion of blood in the brain. He was 6,1 years of age, and has been resident in the Wai« rurapa a long time. Mabton. February 16. A man named Wetherall, who has been surveying on the Awarua Block, was lost on Saturday, and as he had to swim the Eangitikei to get to camp, it is fearpd he has been drowned. Parties are out searching. Wellington, Fobruary 17. At the temperance meeting, at which was delivered an address, a series of resolutions were carried asking the New Zealand Alliance to bring a Local Veto Bill in next session of Parliament, and appealing to the country to support it. A young man named George Soraervi lie, aged 27, was lost overboard from the steamer Mawhera, oa her passage from Grey mouth to Wellington.
