Some 42,000 bales remained on hand from the fourth series, so that for the currentauctions the net available is, say, 192,000 bales. As compared with the closing rates of the fourth series, good greasy and scoured merino, and crossbreds — the last of which were sparsely represented in the opening catalogues— showed little change, but other descriptions on on average ruled about 5 per cent lower. Sheepskins..— At the public sales held on the 25th and 30th ultimo, 2600 bales were catalogued, of which 2250 bales changed hands under tho hammer. The sales were well attended, but the demand was irregular, and prices of merino skins were on average about £d per lb lower than at the preceding sales, while crossbred skins were generally unchanged. Since the auctions about 100 bales have been sold privately at the rates then current. Butter — Since our last issue the ' Cuzco' has arrived with the first of the new season's Australian make. This was landed in good condition and met a ready sale at from 100s and 124s per cwfc. Continental, with the exception of Friesland and Danish, is dull of sale."
