Ashurst Notes
(FROM OtJR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Our member has interested himself in several little matters affecting- our town and has had considerable trouble m getting a recreation ground for us, but I believe his efforts will be rewarded by obtaining the very piece we asked for. This is a portion of the railwaj' reserve, a very pretty epot, fringed with light bush, which affords a grateful shelter in summer time. There is no underscrub, so that we can spread our repasts under the greewood tree, and in imagination go back to the days of Eobin Hood and [ Little John. The first truck load of split sleepers was shipped this last week at Ashurst station. There is a contract for 1500 being proceeded with, the timber for which is obtained principally from the section on the Spur and Watershed roads. There really seems to be no end to the totara» it is contiunally turning up fr<>m odd sections and now that Government will take split sleepers, these odd lofc9 Can be brought in ; great help this to the farmer who is lucky enough to have some. Ashurst settlers, as a body, are greatly indebted to totara for their start in the world. We have been exporting for 12 years; that means many hundreds of pounds circulated — Commend me to a timber district.
