Chinese news per British India eteamer ] at Thursday Island states that while a squadron of 12 Chinese warships Were anchored off Chusan, one of the group of islands near the mouth of the Yang-tee-Kiang, last raonth< a gale ar>se. Two of the ships put to eea and foundered, 700 fifficel'S and men being drowned. During the same galev a- whole fleet of fishing vessels were lost near Swatow< a seaport on the south-east ooa9t of China, in the province <>f Tuaugtung. In this latter disaster it is estimated that from 3000 to 5000 souls perished. December 12. Later news from China statos that tho two warships which put to sea during the recent gale aud were reported- to have foundered with all hands, haye returned '„o port safely.
