The Mangaone Public Hall was form ally opened on Thursday evening las by a plain and fancy dress ball, whicl was an entire success in every way Between 50 and 60 couples who attendee kept upthedancing with spirit till about^ o'clock on Fridaj morning. Mr EL L. Sher. will acted as M.(J. and cai ried out his duties very efficiently. Visitors from Feildniff, Ashurst, Taonui and the Harbor Board Block were present. A large number appeared in fancy dress, some of the costumes being both quaint and picturesque. Ainougst the ladies the most noticeable were — ' Sunshine,' Miss Wells; ' Spanish Peasant Girl,' Miss Pleasants ; ' Flower Girl,' Miss Lankshear ; ' Italian Peasant Girl,' a young lady from Ashurst whose name we were unable to ascertain. Amongst the gentleman were — ' Policeman, ' M r R. F. Haybittle ; ' Gentleman of the 17th Century,' Mr Sherwill; ' Cricketer,' Mr J. Brown ; ' Sailors,' Messrs A. Adsett and Johansan ; ' Night and Day,' Mr Owen Pleasants, junr. ; • Jockey' and ' Red Indian,' Mr L. Pike ; • Bunthorne, Mr F. Keen ; ' Soldier,' Mr

G. Ashworth ; • Clown, 1 Mr J. Duley (the funniest character in the room) ; Messrs Nicholson and Lovejoy also appeared in character. The music (piano, cornet and three violins) was far and away the best that has ever been heard in Mangaone. The room was tastefully decorated with nikau palm leaves, flags, Chinese lanterns, &c, several gentlemen having rolled up and assisted the Committee all through. High enconhuns were passed upon the Hall by all the visitors. The Hall was taken over from the contractors, M essrs Rimmer, Duley and Craven, of Ashurst, a few days ago. It is a substantial building 50 feet long by 30 feet wide, with a 14 feet stud. A good stage has been erected, seats, screens, &c, made for the inside, and the outside front has been ornamented and finished off in a workmanlike manner.
