Progress of American States
Nothing strikes a reader of American newspapers so much as the great •pvf)gresß,of .the Southern States. Recent,, returns show an extraordinary" increase in all lines of wealth and production; in the last ten years. The property assessment totals have gone, for example, from 2164 million dollars: ito 3837 millions, while the indebtedness of the country shows a debase of 15 per cent. The 7000 , injies, pf railway have, gone up to 40,0,00,' the output of the ironworks has gone from 350,000; tons to I}7§o,Qoo tons; the wealth per head of' the people has risen from f our hundred to six hundred dollars ; and Agriculture ;haa increased by some 54 per cent.: -These; figures show the ■wonderful richness of the Southern States. They point to their predominance in the Union in time by . .sheer superiority of weight. For the present this prosperity is the battle •ground for the arguments of Freetrade and Protection. The North asks •""Why do you find; fault with Pro- . tectlve Republicanism when it has .'done so much for you?" The South - replies " Freetrade would have done • twice' as well for as." And so the -argument rages. But the South conitiriues to progress. (
