Lucky Birmingham
With the advance of settlement in Birmingham and the surrounding districts a number of thoso wan' B which accompany or follow civilisation, begin to clamour for gratification. If they were artificial, and therefore unnecessary, very little notice would bo taken of them, but when they are the real and actual requirements of a progressive people they command attention. It is worthy of notice that when our friends " up the Kiuaboltou road" say they aro in need of auyihing, the " Fates and the Powers that be" seem to combine to grant their desires. We cuold quote a d<>zen instances in confirmation of this statemeut, but one will suffice. They wanted a bi weekly | mail service to Biruiiugiiam — aud they got it. They found a daily mail ser- ' vice would suit them better — a daily mail service now exists. L itely it has been found that when the settlers had to make affidavits, or get siguatnres • witnessed, it was very inconvenient
for them to come to Feilding to obtain the services of a Justice of the Peace for this purpose. Application was therefore made through Mr Macabthub, the mem ber for Manawatu, who at once interviewed the Minister of Justice ou the subject, who was promised that two Justices of the Peace, resident uear Birmingham, will be appointed as soon as the House is prorogund, but not till then, because it is a rule, never departed from, not to ap» point Justices during the sitting of | Parliament. mrst* ii n n nun ■ i _B—~—
