The Subscription Concert
• "■ The grand Subscription Concert in aid of the widow and family of the late Mr By W. Morphy, took place on Friday night in the Assembly Booms. The attendance was very good, every seat in the auditorium being comfortably filled. The programme was opened by Miss Bellve who played a pianoforte' solo wifcb-goodiawte and execution, she also sang "The Murmur of the Shell" very sweetly^ and; rev' '""' ceived an encore, to which she respoddVdl Mrs Macarthur gave the song: " Keegihv Heart true to me," iawhieb MrsfT^miiaii played the piano accompaniment, i and Miss Neil played the violin obligate; . The piece was very excellently rang and the accompaniments rendered with great- fees ing and brilliant execution.- Miss Kett afterwards played a violin solo"** Horn* \ Sweet Home" with variations, in which. "''.'[ she was accompanied on the piand by : j(trflf Duncan. Miss Neil displayed great power over her instrument, and at that ' completion of the piece was accorded/a* ' ... most enthusiastic encore, to which; she very gracefully responded and was againt loudly applauded. Mr Hartgiß sang: "The Old Guard" and was recalled^ The recitation by Mr H. Haybittle, ** Kissing Cup ; Wins" was a masterpiece delivered in his best style, he was, of course, recalled and gave " tittle Jacob,?' wßicb delighted and amused the audience. Miss: Bray sang "The Biver of Years'' very well indeed, and was deservedly applauded- • Mr Horsford sang "Marching ".in good style, and earned a reception. In the second part Mr Parker played an overture on the pianoforte with all the brilliancy of a perfect master. ! He also* played several accompaniments during: the evening. Mr Parker is a decided acquisition to musical circles in 'Feildifig,. When Mr Gilbert appeared he was well' received, and his song " Queen of the Earthy was encored. He responded.wjtb.. " Our Jaok," for which he was again applauded. The comic duett (ihstriiaieiiitajiX by Messrs Fowler and Elldrigton' was verjr funny and the local hits remarkably aptThe artists were recalled three or four times, and on each occasion favored the audience with a fresh batch of " locals,'* " Mr Elkington sang in character "Thee Good .Young man that Died;*? : ahd "The Joser Cricket Club" - iba ai war applauded. The cornet solo by Mr Fraser created roars of laughter j and Mr Ftttser had to repeat the performance. 'Tfceydog:" dance by Mr Foster was a success and! with a little more practice he will make ay good dancer. Mr Fowler, iv big woateof Wpy, style, favored the audience' Hnih » touching ditty showing how to ' dodge, trouble. He had to respond to aif encored" Miss Samuels, who kindly came to theassistance of the committee at the last moment, was a pleasant surprise, -and her singing waa very much admired., * iShe= was rapturously applauded and recalied, when her second effort was even more gratifying than her first. , S The song "Clara Nolan's Ball" giv'enf by Mr Fred Keen, was very amuaiqg, .ani '■■- it was not too much to say that Mr Keen scored an entire success. . The perfor-v mance was concluded with a comic, sketch^; in which Messrs Porthouse, Keenvltf9«t.; ■■,+ Fraser appeared to great advantage, ktis.i * kept the audience in roars of laughter' from the beginning to the end of the pieoei ;
