Fair Trade and Protection
Babon db Worms writes : — " I consider fair trade and protection to be in reality synonymous expressions, and I believe the re- establishment of protection in any shape to be impracticable. Fair trade has made the cost of living in Great Britain lower than in any other important country in the world, and as wages have risen considerably since its period of introduction, it is evident that the condition of the mass of the population of these islands has improved under the new regime. The recent speech of President Cleveland shows that the introduction of free trade principles into the United States has become a question of the immediate future, and I am inclined to believe that if means could only be found to enable the great Continental Powers to reduce their colossal armaments, and thus improve their financial positions the general abandonment of protection and the ultimate universal adoption of free trade might not be the Utopian idea that many people imagine."
