The Feilding Star. THURSDAY, JULY 10, 1884. Local & General News.

J — + — i Auckland "Labour" calls Mr MilchelI son " an alarming accident." We have received from the Government Printer a number of Parliamentary ■ papers. The Wairarapa took 77 passengers on her second trip to the South Sea Islands, j Mr D. Downes, of Feilding, was among! the number. Messrs P. and J. Bartholomew are shipping some splendid heart of totara [ spars, perhaps the largest ever sent from ' Mauawatu. They are 14 x 14 inches and i nearly 50 feet long. The number of cattle and horses which are turned out in the streets at night to enjoy a run and a feed has not deminished since the appointment of the new ranger. The stock sales of Messrs Halcombe '. and Sherwill at Ashhurst are growing steadily into favor. The attendance yesterday was very good, and although the bidding was not very spirited, yet on the whole the prices realised were very satisfactory. The Anniversary Banquet of the Feilding Brass Band, will be held on Tuesday next. His Worship the Mayor, Mr Sherwill, has consented to preside. We are pleased to learn that the affair promises to be in every way a success as the tickets for admission are going off very freely. For the information of settlers in and around Awahuri we may mention that copies of the electoral roll for the Manawatu district have been left at the residence of Mr Weightman, and also at Mr Bennett's store, where they may be consulted. An American editor thus explained to a young lady the difference between printing a book and publishing one for her : — "If I should print a kiss on a beautiful young lady's cheek it would be printing, but if 1 were tell the whole world about it. that would be publishing." The Panama Canal will not bo straight or of uniform width ; the general width will be about 50 yards, with expansions along the line to permit vessels to pass one another with ease. The cut at the deepest point will be nearly 150 to 160 yards deep and 300 yards wide. Three of the members of Mr Macarthur's election committee at Feilding visited Awahuri yesterday, and made a house to house canvas of the neighborhood. The result was on the whole verj satisfactory, as the large majority of the electors expressed their intention ot voting for Mr Macarthur. The editor of Truth, writes : — " I continually see in the newspapers allusions to the excellence of Australian and New Zealand mutton. It-is cheap, and it is four years old. But where it is to be bought P It is absorbed by the West End butchers and sold as English mutton at English prices.?" Mr Rees lias filed, an indictment against Mr Locke for corrupt practices during the recent election on the East Coast, alleging that Mr Locke paid 'moneys outside and beyond the exception authorised by the first and second schedules of the Corrupt Practices Pre vention Act, beyond the sum of £25, such being an indictable offence. During a speech made at Mosgiel by Mr Cairnross, who is a candidate for a seat in the House, insured the taxation on teetotal drinks such as soda water, gingpr beer, Ac, by saying he would oppose such an impost. It goes without saying that a number of anti teetotalers have taken tip the subject, and it is probable that a tax of one halfpenny per bottle will be attempted to be put on. The Makino Brass Band will parade on the Square on Saturday evening next, weather permitting, when the following programme will be gone through: — March, M Annie dear, lam called away ; " Polka. "Summer Flowers ;" Fantasia, "The Christian Soldier; " Waltz, "Susette;" March, "Ever Welcome;" Polka. "Gazelle;" Quadrille, "Joyous Friends;" Galop, " Circus ; " Schottische, " Dora." God Save the Queen. — J. P. Curbeen, Bandmaster. A few years aeo (says the Napier Telegraph) the execution of a convicted murderer was by no means an expensive operation. From the look of the gallows when E!ereopa was hanged at Napier we should think the whole job did not cost ten shillings. It is different now. Some sort of patent gallows is to be forwarded from Wellington, and the Governor of the gaol of the central city, accompanied by a hangman, will be here this week to carry out the sentence passed on Edwards. This is centralism with a vengeance. Surely the Telegraph does not mean to imply that " hanging" is " local industry" in Napier. Another case of informality cropped up at the R.M. Court yesterday. A civil case was called on for hearing, when His Worship pointed out that the summons had been served on the 4th instant, and as the court was then sitting on the 9th, there could not have been five clear days between the two dates, as required by law. He said he could not use his discretion in the matter, as even if the case was heard any decision he might give could be nullified. He had therefore no alternative but to adjourn the case till another sitting of the court. We mention the above circumstance as it may be useful to. persons who a.e likely, to have business at the c*urt, whether asplaintiffs or defendants. ' : •>' '
