It is announced that the Imperial Go* vernment has invited the Australasian Colonies to contribute towards the ex- , pense to be incurred by the proposed extension of British rule in tho Western Pacific. In the House of Commons last night, before the Bill for the reform of the franchise had been finally passed, Mr Gladstone made a speech in which he took occasion to wtrn the House of Lords that the rejection of the measure in that Chamber could only be attended with the gravest results to the nation. The private opinion of both Earl Carnarvon and Lord Rosebery is that war is invitable between France and England unless the Recidivistes Bill is abandoned. They are, however, unable to convince Earl Derby of tho gravity of the situa tion. M. de Veille, an eminent French jurist, asserts that the Anglo-French Treaty does not permit of the extradition of escaped recidiviates. The frozen meat by the steamer L' curia is in splendid condition, and is realising 5d per lb. Mr Gladstone intends to meet tho vote of censure on his Egyptian policy by a direct negative. Fully one quarter of the total popula tion of Toulon has fled from tho city through fear of cholera. Eight deaths occurred there on Thursday. Pabis, June 28. News is to haud from Marneilles that cholera has made its appearance there, and deaths havo already occurred. The French Goverhment havo ordered vigorous preparations to be made, with the object of rexuming hostilities against the Chinese in Tonqmn.
