The Manawatu Seat
A pMblic meeting was held at Halcombe on Thursday, convened by Mr Lacey. Very few person* were present. Mr A. Harris in the chair. The professed object of the convener was to endeavor to put up . a candidate, in opposition to Mr Macarthur, for Manawatu. As he had no one to propose and was not very clear on the subject himself, he moved a resolution to the effect that the meeting would support any reliable candidate who«e object wax the welfare of the district and of the whole Colony. Thin was seconded by Mr Farley and carried - ' by eight rotes to one. Mr Purkiss and Mr Bell both spoke in favor of Mr Macarthur. Mr Harris left the chair to inform the electors that the Mangaone road waVa " white elephant "—a new and interesting discovery in natural history. The meeting dispersed with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman.
