Shocking Accident.

*. We are sorry to report that a very distressing accident occurred at Makino on Thursday to Mr Oliver Caldwell, of the Makino Saw Mill. It appears tliat he was at his usual work of driving a horse attached to a trolley laden with logs from the bush, and that soon after starting with the load, it is conjectured he had occasion to alight and strike the horse with a supplejack, whereupon the animal resented the blow by giving a violent kick, striking Mr Caldwell full lin the face, breaking both his jaws, and lacerating his mouth in a most ghastly manner. The horse, it seems, proceeded with his load to the mill, and in a quarter of an hour after the accident Mr Caldwell was picked up on the tramway in an unconscious state, and conveyed home. Dr Johnston was at once sent for, and set the broken bones and dressed the wounds, and the unfortuuate sufferer is progressing as favorably as can be expected, but of course is utterly unable to eat or articulate, and as yet can give no accurate account of the accident. [Later information to hand is to the effect that whether both jaws are broken or only one, is not yet ascertained. We understand the palate is divided, and* the.i'aose broken, , but ..that Mr i aldwell is now- able to speak from the throat sufficiently to make himself understood.] '
