The cause of the accident at Sunder* land is attributed to the fact that prizes j were offered to the children who should be first down the stairs, and that the door was nearly closed by the doorkeeper to control the rush. The cargo of frozen meat by the ship Lady Jocelyn, from Wellington, has arrived in good condition. The first portion of the mutton was sold to-day, and realised 6£<l per lb. Telegrams are to hand reporting that an English marabout is preaching a jehad or holy war in south-west Egypt. A Tunis despatch on the subject adds that the Egyptian Government has already despatched a body of troops to the locality to effect the capture of the marabout and his followers. In the House of Commons last night a Bill for legalising marriage with a deceased wife's sister passed through committee, and was ordered to be read a third time. The Daily News, in its issue this morning, confirms the statement that Sir Anthony Musgrave, late Governor of Jamaica, and not Richard O'Shaughnessy has been appointed to the vacant Governorship of Queensland, and states that Sir Anthony will sail for Australia in a few weeks.
