LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Yesterday afternoon the state school broke up for the Christmas holidays. Sir William Jervois will leave Adelaide for Wellington oa January Sth. Mr S. J. Thompson, late of Feilding, commenced business in Hawera on Tuesday last. We wish Mr Thompson every prosperity in his new undertaking. It is understood in the London financial circle- that the New Zealand loan will be placed on the market this month. Mr Charles Bray, County Engineer has completed the plans, grades, and specific cations for 64 miles of County roads in order that advantage may bo taken by the County of the *' Roads and Bridges Construction Bill of last session." The proposed celebration of the anniversary of the Feilding settlement is meeting with considerable favor, and many of the first settlers now living in the outlying districts have promised their assistance, presence and patronage. We have to acknowledge receipt of a complimentary ticket from the secretary of the Palmerston Choral Society, for the opening concert, which takes place at the Forester's Hall, on Wednesday, December 20th, 1882, Our contemporary tiie Wanganui Chronicle, in its Thursday's issue, quotes from our columns, without acknowledgment, the entries for our local sports on Boxing Day. Our contemporary, the Rangitikei Advocate, has also failed to exhibit its usual courtesy. We learn from the Advocate that the Hon Mr Rolleston will make a personal inspection of the Marten-Murimotu road. He also received a deputation consisting of Mr Milne, the Rmgitikei 'County Chairman, and Messrs A. Simpson, R. K. Simpson, and D. Fraser. They were introduced by Mr J". Stevens, M.H.B. for Rangitikei. After hearing the views on the subject of the grant-in-aid, Mr Rolleston said he wocld like to ge> through and see for himself before mating auy promises. He wished to see the back country on to Marton, and that was the principal object of his visit. We have had the pleasure of viewing some drawings now for sale in the jeweller's shop of Mr Hugli. Tbey aro the production of a gifted lady, a relative of Mr Hugli, and are almost perfect masterpieces. We have seldom seen drawings where such perfection has been attained. The subjects are very pleasing. Dne is the idealic representation of an infant fleeting Heavenwards after death, another is a drawing of a Bernese peasant girl, and the third is a landscape drawing of a romantic scene near Neuchatel. These pictures are well worthy of a visit from connoiseurs who have any pretensions to taste in such matters. An enormous quantity of wool '(says the Post) has been brought into Wellington during the past few days for transhipment into the large English vessels now lying alongside the piers. The Queen's Wharf .presented quite an animated appearance last Thursday, owing to the large number of bales wbich were being moved along it, and tho wool presses in the shed on the second T were busily employed from early morning in dumping the material for export. No fewer than eight steamers Were discharging Wool simultaneously at the Queen's Wharf, "a which tends to show how busy the traffic in that commodity is at this season of the year. When the train is advancing np an in> • clinc near Wangaehu, a strange trio is regularly observed by the engine-driver and others who "know when to look ont for it. This trio consists of two dogs and a tame pigeon. They very seldom i miss the one train which is the especial object ol their attention, and their punctuality is remarkable. A few minutes of time gained by the train seems to put them out a great deal, and the pigeon appears the best timekeeper, for it always careers ia tlic van, encouraging the dogs to keen up with him in his rapid flight towards the approaching train- A few hundred yards' race alongside finishes the sport, and the three wend their way homewards, the pigeon stopping occasionally on an eleration to watch his .comrades as they gaiubol along. Snch a strange companionship is rery rare, und such an incongruous combination of intelligence by animals is a matter to c.v-

Mr McGregor, the Government In- j pector of machinery, is at present on an fficial visit to Feilding. The prizes for the Makino school chilren were distributed yesterday by Mr tyy, the chairman of the local school ioard. The prizes consisted of choice nd well selected works by standard .uthors. A sum of £6 was expeuded in heir purchase, besides a cumber preeuted by friends. The agent of the Press Association at patea has peculiar ideas as to what items ;onstituto new* worth paying telegraph ;h_rgrs for. This mormng he wired that ,he Maones at Whenuakura had cap;ured 700 sharks during the season ! It sould have been quite as interesting to Lhe general public if he had telegraphed iow enany mosquitoes had. bsen killed on ] Lhe coast this summer. We are glad to notice thai; our suggestions on the subject of a woollen factory ire receiving attention from the settlers in Rangitikei. We learn from the Advocate that several prominent settler* have promised to give aoy scheme for the formation of such a factory their hearty support. While we are very pleased to Bee our neighbors showing signs of action in this matter, we would prefer that Palmerston or Feilding should take the first steps. The latest item from Makino is that the wife of a settler in that neighborhood has sought " fresh field* and pastures new," accompanied by a gallant paramour. No doubt much, sympathy will be felt for the M brokeE-hearted" husband. The worst feature ia the east is that an infant is left behind by the heartless mother. A warrant will he issued against the gay Lothario at once for stealing clothing and sundry small articles, the property of the husband. Y» sterday we inspected the mew premises (Glasgow House), about to be -opened by Mr George Crichton as a general store and drapery establishment, at the corner of Manchester and Grey streets. The improvements introduced into the large room to be used as the shop are marked, and will not only afford the means of making a splendid display of all the commodities for sale, but will be of considerable convenience to his patrons. The plan of the show room for ladies proves that every possible means are about to be used by Mr Crichton to establish a popular and profitable business in FoildMr H. Wollerman, -he popular brewer of Palmerston, is just now turning out a special brow of sparkling ales for the Christmas season. Mr Wollerman's beers and porter are becoming very popular all over the district, and he now supplies Bulls, Awahuri, Woodvdlle, Ashurst, Palmerston. and Feilding with large orders. Mr Wollerman has sent us a sample of his new brew. The beer is a very pleasant drink — cool, fresh, and nala table — and .during the present hot weather will form a most refreshing beverage. Mr Wollerman will doubtless have a large sale for his really splendid beer, ales, Ac. We hear that Mr S. Mandel, the popular and enterprising professor of the tonsorial art in Wellington, is about tc open a branch of his business in Palmerston. Mr Lyons, the successful manager of Mr Mandel 's branch in Feilding, visited Palmerston on Wednesday last in company w_th Mr Mandel, in order to make the necessary preliminary arrangements. Mr Mandel, we believe, bought out a local havr-dresser in Palmerston, and Mr Lyons will leave in a few days to undertake the management of the new branch. The Feilding branch will be conducted by Mr Lyons' brother, lately from Wellington. We wish Mr Mandel all the success his enterprise deserves.
