In the Police ( ourt on Wednesday a child four ye.-irs old was brought before tlie Bench as neglected. The police had fouod it positively drunk in Staffordstreer, the mother having given it liquor and turned it out. It was sent to the Industrial School. A laborer named John Gordon, who wns arrested tins nfternoon on a charge of stealing a natch and chain from an hotel, committed suicide in the police cell by cutting his throat with a pen« knife. He expired shortly after being discovered. He had been searched, but the pen-knife must have been secreted purposely. Auckland, This Day. The Choral Society has been requested to send a contingent to the forthcoming musical festival at Melbourne, but declined. Joseph Pittner, who joined the Austrian army just before the battle of Waterloo, has died at Pohui, aged 87. Mr Bryce has gone to Rotorua in connection with the Thermal Springs Re* serve. Frank Cornwall, the Samoan trader, for horsewhipping C. C. McMillan, partner in she firm of McArthurand Co., got 24 hours' imprisonment with hard labor. Wellington, This Day Mr L. G. Reid, of I imam, has been appointed Assistant Law Officer, vice W. M. Lewis. Mr Reid formerly held a similar position. In the Appeal Court to-day the conspiracy case of Adams was argued, their Honors reserving judgment until Monday. The ketch Elizabeth, which went ashore at Otaki, is much strained, and leaking. However, it is thought that necessary repairs can be affected at Otaki.
