The Fielding Star. WEDNESDAY, OCT. 11. 1882. SUMMER PROSPECTS.

An approximate estimate of the exports from the Manchester Block dm- I in"" the coming summer months wiii j l prove interfstiijg to all of our readers in the Manawa : u, and afford those i resident in other part-* of the Colony i i a fair am >unr ol information as fo the I 1 resources of this part of the .Manawatu I i Vailey, and how they are being de- j veloped by the energy of tire settlers, j assisted by the prolific nature ol the j soil and climate. In order to prevent any possibility of an over-estimate ; biin'-r made, we will be considerably guided by the figures supplied from , time to time by the Government re- ; j turns, which give the quantities car- ! riod by rail from Feildint.'. and by our own knowledge of the amount and . value of all kin.'s of produce exported. , The largest item in the list is of course timber. The demand for this item from the saw mills iv this district has largely increased during the lost two months, and orders are in hand ex- ' tending over a period of three months for Australian and southern markets. The local demand for sawn timber, posts and rails, stabs, and firewood, is also steadily increasing. The followin «>• is a list, of the value of the probaide exports from Feilding during the ensuing six months, and we believe the future will justify the statement: Vajue Timber, 0,000,000 feet £-.30,000 • Firewood ... ... ... 750 I Posts and Rails 250 I Grain 4,000 ! Wool 3,000 Cattle and Sheep 10,000 Hides and (allow 1,000 Fungus 2,000 Total £51,000 being an average of, say, £17 per head of population. This is a most creditable amount when the I small population on the Block is con- | sidered ; to this may be added £-1000 I for bush e'earii'g and fencing. Tn our estimate of the grain exports we are entirely guided by those of last year. We arc aware that about 20 per cent more land is now under grain crops than there was then, but we do not consider it advisable to calculate on a proportionate increase in the j produc" for the coming season. It is j more than probable that we have also 'under-estimated th • value of the j wool to be exported, and the same : may be said of all the other items on the list. That so small a district, with such a scattered population, should produce such a large sum of n onev, is a matter of surj rise and for congratulation. It also proves the large and profitable returns from all kinds or capital invested in the vari 1 ous saw mills and farms, both for sheep and cattle. 'lhe Kiwitea is rapidly being stocked, and the number of lat cattle sent from thence to the auction sales in Feilding is rapidly increasing, encouraged as the s"ock : raisers are by the daily advance in the ! value of cattle. From the same cause I the Makino and Taonui are also i rapidly assuming all the appearance of thriving suburbs to the township of Feilding, the settlers there ; having every confidence in them — j solves and the land on which the}' are ! settled to make a prosperous future. Jt is to be not'-d that we have not j taken into consideration imports, or ; the introduction of outside capita], as our int'Mition is principally to illus trate the actual condition of Feilding I and its suburbs as far as internal revenue is concerned.
