The following horses have been scratched for the Melbourne Cup race:— Lavina, Phorkus, Annandale, Crazy Jane, Fandango, and Lord Clifden. Sydney, October, 3-. A fire occurred at Larter's bedding factory, in George-street, last night, resulting in the complete destruction of the premises and the death of a woman who was sleeping there. The coal lumpers employed on the Sydney w arves are demanding 3d per hour tdvance of wages, and a strike is feared to be imminent. Received October 4, 1 a.m.] Sydney, October 3. The first three heats for the rowing trophies offered by Mr Frank Punch were rowed to-day on the Paramatta River, and were won by Laycock, Rush, and Trickett respectively.
