L\ST NIGHT'S MEETING. ' A special meeting of the Council was held last evening at the Borough Cham-^^ liers. Present— Crs Lethbridge, Loudon.^^ Hiiftjin, Lewers, J. C Thompson, Sher-^^ will. Goodbehere, and S. J. Thompson. A letter was read from his Worship the Mayor, announcing that his illness prevented him attending the meeting. On the motion of Cr Higgin, seconded by Cr Loudon, Cr Lethbridge was voted to the chair. i NEW MEMBEKB. : Messrs Sherwill, Goodbehere and S.J. Thompson, the newly elected nieubers, made the usual declarations, and took their seats at the table. j MINUTES. j The minutes of the previous meeting, ! together with the minutes of a special meeting in re the Borough Banger, were read nnd confirmed. ! CORRESPONDENCE. ; Letter from Mr E. B. Gichard, asking permission of the Council to erect a verandah in front of his premises facing Manchester-street. Letter from Hans Andresen, asking ' leave of the Council to place a small ■ wooden bridge across the water table m j front of his shop. j Letter from the Manchester Highway Board, asking a refund of ha^f the money the Board expended, in clearing away logs lodged against the ' piers of : the Oroua bridge on the Feilding and Ashurst -oads during the late flood. Cr Higgin proposed, and Cr J. C. Thompson seconded, that Mr Gichard's request be granted, suhject to the approval of the Public Workß Committee. Cr Lewers suggested that some system . should be adopted with regard to the height and width of verandahs, in. order to avoid confusion and trouble in future. j The motion was agreed to. Cr Loudon proposed that the sum of £4. 16s be paid to the Manchester Higliway Board, for repairs to Oroua Bridge, ' caused by the flooding of Oroua River. Cr Higgin suggested that the matter be referred to the Finance Committee. Cr J. C. Thompson questioned. /the liability of the Council in the matter. After some discussion the matter was referred to the Finance Committee. Proposed by Cr J. C. i hompson, seconded by Cr Goodbehere, and carried* that Mr Andresen's request be granted that he be allowed to erect a bridge oppoj site his premises, such bridge to be rej moved when requested by the Council. Cr Lethbridge proposed, and Cr S. J. Thonipsou seconded, that the standing committee be abolished.— Carried. '' Cr Higgin proposed, and Cr J. C. Thompson seconded, that Crs Lowers, London, Sherwill, and Goodbehere form the Finance Committee. Cr Loudon nised the point ns to whether the proposer should not also lie \ a member of the committee. ■ The Chairman ruling in the affirmative, 1 Cr Higgin withdrew his resolution. Cr Loudon propose' 1 , and Cr J. C 1 j Thompson seconded, that L'rs Lewers,' 1 1 Sherwill, Goodbehere, and the 1 mover \ j form the Financial Committe. The ' motion was carried. - -^ ' ! Cr Higgin proposed, and Cr Sherwill seconded, Crs Higgin, Rutherford, S. J. Thompson, and Lethbridge form the public Works ommittee. ■ Cr Lethbridge suggested that the 1 name; be adde ■ to the committee, 1 the Mayor to act at Chairman. The suggestion being adopted, Cr Higgin's proposition was carried. The Council then adjourned till Thurs- > day, the 28th inst
