SHEEP RETURNS.

♦ Fhom a Government return of sheepowners, and the number of sheep and lambs in the colony on 31st of May, in the years 1879, 1880, and 1881, we make the following extracts, which will doubtless prove interesling to our readers. In 1879 there were 93,172 sheep; in 1880 these were reduced to 90,702 ; in 1881 they were increased to 107,484, in the Manawatu County ; and in the Wellington sub-division of the County, for the same years, 30,299, 32,408, 36,802, respectively, making totals of 123,471, 123,110, and 144, -'86, and showing a small decrease in 1880 of say 361. But in 1881 the total was increased by 21,176, which is the result of more land being fenced and prepared for their occupation, and heavier stocks carried. The mere increase in itself is remarkably small, being only a little over fifteen per cent, but when it is remembered that the consumption of sheep in the Manawatu is enormours, it is not surprising. The total number of cattle on the 3rd April, 1881, was, 27,587 ; pigs, 6881 ; horses, 3536. The total number of sheep owners is set down as 225.
