SPORTS MEETING

FIXTURE AT ONEWHERO A SUCCESSFUL EFFORT INTERESTING PROGRAMME Tlio Onewhero Sports Club conducted a very successful sports meeting in Mr R. Crawford's paddock, Onewhero, on Saturday. Favoured with ideal weather, good entries and an excellent crowd of interested spectators, the club lias every reason to feel proud of the result of the fixture. Gale receipts totalled UJ2. A big programme of horse events was run off, ami great credit is due to the hand of willing officials who kept things moving, with the result that there was never a dull moment throughout the proceedings. Competition in all events was very keen, and with ' good entries, the judge, Mr Miles Bailey, had a thankless job, bul carried out his duties to the satisfaction of all. In the open hunters’ competition some excellent jumping was witnessed, four horses lining for (irsl place. necessitating them doing a further round the result being a win for Mr E. ■ Logan. The pony hunter • class attracted a record held of 22, and here again the jumping was of a high standard, but there was no doubt about the eventual winner. \V. Pitman's bay pony, well ridden by It. Mackie. which gave a dashing display to win the handsome trophy. Incidentally this pony changed hands for a substantial figure later in the afternoon. Keen Galloping Contests The gallops -created unusual interest and soon' excellent * races were witnessed. In the Maiden Gallop of four furlongs, G. fTaskell's Riki had a rather cuml'orlable win from F. Muir's Meulu. with .1. Waller's Senorifa a moderate third. The Maiden Hurdles. If miles, resulted in P. 'Peryer's Pop Eye leading practically throughout to win easing up from Masc.nl and Flashing Spear, the latter finishing very fast after being well hack early.

The big flat event of the day. ihe Onewhero Slakes, run over nine, furlongs, provided a great contest between Bronze Mele and Hopeful Lady, which were old in front most of Ihe way, and in a light finish the former prevailed by a . narrow margin. The Ponganui Hurdles resulted in a stirring finish. Dollar Bill and Mascot made play for the greater part of the journey, and coming to the last fence just led from Flashing Spear, bul once over Flashing Spear pul in his claim, and ridden right, out. won by a narrow margin from Dollar Bill, wilh Mascot a close third. Bronze Meter, carrying 12.7, completed a good double in winning the GrawfonT Plate. lie took the lead a good way from home and held on long enough to slave off a si rung challenge from Pop Eye.
