FRANKLIN COUNCIL MEETING GENERAL BUSINESS The monthly meeting of the Franklin County Council was held on Monday when there were present: Messrs J. N. Massey, M.P. (chairman), A. M. Hamilton, G. R. Walsh, A. R. T. Urquhart, W. A. Peterson, K. A. Murray, W. E. Shuker, A. J. Milliken, R. Wilcox and R. W. Bennett, together with the county clerk (Mr Alan P. Day) and the countv engineer (Mr A. G. Bettany), Mr A. R. Gatland, Drury, wrote stating that he was prepared to remove willows frorn Hay’s Creek along the lines suggested by the county engineer. He did "hot, however, consider the removal of willows would stop the erosion at other points, hut suggested that groynes might be necessary.—The letter was received. Objection to Suggested Road The executors in the estate of the late Mr E. K. Buckingham formally objected to a proposal to take a road through the estate property at Mangatawlfiri.—The letter was received. Mr F. C. Seeger, Te Toro, asked when the new road—Lees Gully to Pollok—would be constructed to provide access to Mr .T. L. Seeger’s property. Me pointed out that it was proposed to build a shed and start milking on that property, but this could not he done until a road was provided.—The clerk was asked to reply and state that the council was not able to indicate when the work on (be new road would he started, also that it could not be undertaken until a Government subsidy was made available. The council considered that a Government subsidy was not likely to be voted until the war was over, hut at tiie same time felt representations should he made to the Public Works Department to see what could be done now. Regarding Te Toro landing reserve the county clerk reported that the title disclosed that the land was set aside ns a landing reserve, but so far had not been vested in the council. —It was decided that application he made to the Minister of Lands for the reserve to be vested in the council in order that it might assume control and lease the land not required for landing reserve purposes. Drain Crossing Mr A. G. Potter, Otaua, applied for a bridge over the drain on Bothwell Park Road. The clerk reported that (he title disclosed that there was a 50 link legal road in the proposed position of the bridge as stated by Mr Potter. —Mr Shuker and the engineer were authorised to have a crossing made over the drain when Mr Potter urgently required the same. Regarding the road through Messrs Schlaepfer’s property at Helvetia which was reported to he in a bad shape, it was suggested that rnetal on military camp roads in the Karaka-llelvetia area might be salvaged.—Mr Milliken said that half a mile of the road was in had condition.—The engineer was asked to wait on the Public Works Department to ascertain what possibililies there were in the council having the right, to use metal at present on c:imp areas and roads now abandoned.
