LIEUT.-COL. J. N. ANDERSON, D.S.O. FORMER PUKEKOHE RESIDENT This week’s issue of the New Zealand Gazette announces that Major John Nosbit Anderson, D. 5.0., has been promoted to the rank of LieutenantColonel (temporary), while employed as commander of engineers of a New Zealand Division. Lieutenant-Colonel Anderson was formerly assistant engineer to the 'Franklin County Council prior to accepting the appointment of engineer to Hie Wavcrley County Council. He is well-known in the Franklin district.

In September last Lieutenant-Col-onel Anderson was awarded Ihe D.S.O. for distinguished service in connection with the laying of an Allied minefield in the desert under exceptionally heavy fire. The citation slated: —- Under the direction of Major Anderson. i 000 mines were rapidly laid at Minqar Qaim on June 27 —a vitally protective minefield —before the enemy reached Ihe New Zealanders’ forward defence lines and, in spite of

intense enemy shelling, Major Anderson encouraged his men and he, himself, fused the mines. One truckload was exploded by enemy fire, causing many casualties. When mines had lo be laid near a burning ammunition truck, Major Anderson, showing complete disregard of his own safety, carried them to the area.
