FOR UNITED EFFORT
“OCCASION MIGHT ARISE”
A declaration that he had not receded from the statement he made at last year’s conference that an occasion might arise when it was imperative in the interests of the country’s war effort for those representing all shades of political opinion to get together was made by the Prime Minister in his speech to the Easter Conference of the New Zealand Labour Party, in the course of his remarks on the question of a National Government, reports the
“Standard.” “I would not, and I will not on any occasion, act for the party without the authority of the party,” he declared amidst applause.
Mr Fraser added that as Prime Minister he was also above all responsible to the people of the country, and the time might come when he would regard it as his duty to come to a conference of the party and place his views before the delegates.
