WOMEN’S DIVISION
AUGUST MEETINGS PUKEKOIIE EAST BRANCH FIRST AID TEAM The Pukekohe East branch of the Women’s Division met last week, the president, Mr G. Johnston, presiding over a good attendance in spite of the very unfavourable climatic conditions. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the Division’s housekeeping secretary, Miss Jessie Munro, who passed away suddenly a few days ago. The branch has decided to enter a first aid team in the competition to be held at Pukekohe on October 16. Invitations were received to attend functions at Mauku on September 3, and Papakura, September 11. Both were accepted. Mrs Johnston (Auckland) is to hold another field day in Pukekohe on August 28, and it is expected that many friends will avail themselves of these lectures. Mrs 11. Papesch gave a comprehensive report on the meeting of Waitemata Provincial Council held in Auckland on August 1. • Quite a nice number of little garments were handed in. These will be on hand in case of need. The competition for next month will be a jardiniere of flowers arranged for effect, and the roll call, “Suggestions to improve our birthday party,” which will take place at the meeting on October 8. The social half-hour included a recitation by Mrs Quinnan, song by Mrs Donovan and a competition which was won by Mrs Gannon. Competitions resulted: Pol of marmalade, Mrs Whitmore 1, Mrs J. Morgan 2 and 3: best bloom, Mrs Holmes 1, Mrs Holmes and Mrs Lowrie (equal) 2. Mrs M. Hamilton and Mrs S. Hamilton (equal) 3.
THE PUKEKOHE BRANCH MUCH BUSINESS TRANSACTED There was a good attendance at the August meeting of the Pukekohe Women’s Division which was held in the Presbyterian hall. After the singing of the National Anthem, the Division song and the reciting of the creed, Mi's P. T. Field, pho presided, welcomed members and several visitors. Two new members were enrolled. Members stood in silence in sympathy with Mrs Fitness, whose husband, Mr Robert Fitness, passed away recently. Arrangements were made for the patriotic street stall to be conducted by members of the branch on August 28. Mrs Field gave a resume of the group meeting and also the quarterly meeting of the Waitcmata executive. Letters were read from Mrs Taylor, of Hamilton, and the Claridge family in reply to letters of sympathy sent to them. Competitions resulted: Shoulder spray. Mrs Wymer 1, Mrs Deed 2, Mrs Wymer 3: vase of flowers, Mrs Deed 1, Mrs Wymer 2. Mrs Potter 3; pullover, Mrs’ Reynolds I, Mrs Oswin 2, Mrs Deed 3: shortbread, Mrs Field 1, Mrs Elliott 2, Mrs Reynolds 3; best bloom, Mrs Wymer and Mrs Reynolds (eiiual) 1, Mrs Bilkcy and Mrs Potter (equal) 2, Mrs Cronin and Mrs Fauselt (equal) 3. The surprise_parcel donated bv Mrs Lord was won by Mrs Svendsen. Competitions for September will include a jar of flowers, six wholemeal scones and a best bloom. In place of the handwork competition members are asked to take to next meeting some gift towards a baby's layette which is to be held in readiness for any necessitous case. Mrs W. Cronin gave a report on her visit to conference in the course of which she gave extracts from speeches made by Her Excellency, Lady Newall, Mrs llislop, Mayoress of Wellington, and Mrs Mclntosh, president of the National Council of Women. She also spoke of Hie many "remits submitted. the building of cottages for farm workers and many other matters discussed at the conference. Mrs Cronin was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks and presented by Mrs Field with a lovply posy of violets. Mrs L. Reynolds was again in charge of the trading table and the hostesses who served a dainty afternoon tea were Mcsdames Gathercole, Haslett, Long will. Lubbock and Perry.
PUNI BRANCH RfIEETS the president welcomed back The Puni branch met recenly when members were delighted to welcome hack the president, Mrs P. S. Pritchard, after several months’ absence on sick leave. There was a good attendance. " The roll call, “a proverb,” proved most interesting and instructive. Preliminary arrangements were made for the competition tables for the forthcoming annual fixture of the Western group. Members were Iso appointed to enter for a first aid competition to be held in the near future. There was a wonderful assortment of handkerchiefs made from a salt bag. Some were most beautifully worked. Very pretty aprons were also made and handed in for the forthcoming bazaar. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs Bert Landon for the efficient manner in which she carried out the duties of acting-president during Mrs Pritchard’s absence.
Owing to a motor accident occurring while the meeting was in progress further business had to be held in abeyance as first aid was rendered to the injured men in the hall, pending the arrival of a doctor, this disorganising everything. Competitions resulted: Best apron, Mrs Gill 1. Mrs Pritchard 2; handkerchiefs, Mrs Needham 1, Mrs Pritchard 2.
