TOWN BOARD FVIEETS GENERAL BUSINESS At the monthly meeting of Tuakau Town Board Ihc following were present: Messrs Howard Mad ill (choirman), A. F. Escoll, G. GLmour. G. F. Souness. A. Wright and M A. Lruiekshank, together with Ihe iown cI-Tk (Mr M. IL D. Mcuaium). An apology for absence was received from Mr W. Barnaby to whom the best wishes of the members for a speedy recovery were extended. A motion of condolence with Ihe relatives of ihc late Mr J. 11. Feather was passed. The Lake County Council. Queenstown, solicited support of a resolution urging the Government to abolish the 40-hour week so that the Dominion s war effort could he pursued unimpaired. On the motion of Mr Gilmour, seconded by Mr Wright, the letter was merely ‘‘received.’ The Tuakau School Committee requested that Hie footpath in Church street he repaired.—Referred to the works committee. Power Rationing

The Franklin Electric-Power Board advised that in accordance with instructions from the Controller of Electricity lo economise in the use of electric power, Ihc board had adopted a rationing policy and it was intended to switch on street lights in the evening one hour later than usual, and to switch them off two hours earlier. — The letter was received and the board agreed to co-operate whenever it could.

Mr W. J. Deeble asked the board to reconsider its decision and contribute half the cost of laying a concrete path in front of bis new buildings in George Street. The request was granted, Messrs Cruicksfiank and Escott dissenting. Mr J. Giles wrote urging that Ryder’s road be improved and attention given to blackberries.- —It was decided to have repairs effected to the road and the chairman and clerk were asked to look into the position regarding the blackberries.

It was decided to advertise for a caretaker of the hall and to offer £SO a year. Mr Gilmour voted against the motion as he considered the job worth not more than £4O. A motion, moved by him to this effect, was not seconded. The following committees were appointed: Finance and works, the board; hall, Messrs Souness, Wright and Barnaby; cemetery, Messrs Cruickshank, Escott and Gilmour. On the motion of the .chairman it was decided to forward a letter of appreciation to the Women’s Institute for its action in tending the garden plots at the Tuakau railway station. Accounts totalling £74 0s 4d were passed for payment.
