HISTORIC TREE
A VERY FINE RED GURS The removal of sand at Orua Bay, has led to fears for the survival of an aged red gum tree, the blooms of which have delighted residents of the bay and visitors for many years. A deputation which interviewed the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry, on Tuesday sought the co-operation of the Government with the Franklin County Council in efforts to save the tree. It was pointed out that the seed of the red gum tree was brought from Australia in 1830 by the Rev. James Hamlin, when he established the mission station at Orua Bay. “It is a most “historic tree,” commented Mr Parry, ‘‘and, besides, a beautiful specimen. 1 feel that its age and history will interest all tree lovers. 1 will convey the representations to the Franklin County Council, which body, ] am sure, will be helpful.”
