THE PUKEKOHE GROUP SPORTS QUEEN’S CANDIDATURE OPENING FUNCTION MONDAY NEXT
The first shot in the campaign of the Sports Queen, Mrs .1. M. Stevenson, will be lirecl on Monday next in the Masonic hall, when a monster
flannel dance will be held. At this function Mrs Stevenson will be introduced to the public and a large attendance is assured. All sporting organisations of Pukekohe have lormed themselves into a strong working committee. At a meeting on Monday evening the plan of campaign was consolidated and indications point to the candidate receiving very solid support. In addition to the functions already announced others, including a garden party, have been arranged.
THE BUSINESS QUEEN The'business section of the Pukekohe group has chosen four ladies from which a candidate will be chosen to finally represent it in the preliminary carnival within the Pukekohe group. Those who have consented to contest the issue are: Mrs 11. .1. Thomas, Miss Kathleen Slembridge, Miss Shirley Howe and Miss Sheila Ricluiale.
So far a Farmers' candidate lias not been announced and this is rather disappointing as the effort about to be launched will probably be the biggest patriotic effort of the war in t lie central group to raise funds for I lie allpurposes appeal. Other candidates nominated are Mrs J. M. Stevenson (Sports) and Miss E. J-. Graham (Puni). With three candidates (Sports, Business and Puni) assured, a ding dong contest is promised.
THE TUAKAU GROUP Interest in the Tuakau group which embraces Tuakau, the eastern portion of the Franklin county and the Mangatawhiri and Pokeno districts, is quickening. Four candidates, Miss Ina Deeble (Tuakau), Miss Nonie Reynolds (Bombay-Paparata). Mrs Glimmer (Pokeno) and Miss B. Darby (Mangatawlnri) have so far been announced. A patriotic “shop” has been opened in George Street. Tuakau. and under the able guidance of Mrs \Y. G. Graham will be open on Tuesdays and Saturdays. A series of street collections under tiie supervision of Mrs Win. Barnaby will take place'. The first effort last Friday realised £9 1 is. A house-to-house collection, supervised by Mrs W. G. Graham and Mrs A. F. Eseott, for cash or kind will lie made in the near future. The Tuakau swimming pool committee has been asked to arrange a gala day at. the ■ swimming pool. The organisation of this effort is in the hands of Mrs S. .1. Conelly and Mrs G. Bakalich, while the women’s patriotic committee intend holding a monster card party in the town hall.
LAST NIGHT’S MEETING A meeting of representatives from Bombay-Paparata. Pukekohe Bast, Pokeno, Mangatangi-Miranda, Buckland, Mangatawhiri and Tuakau was held at Tuakau last night to arrange a plan of campaign in connection with the Queen Carnival. -Mr ,i. It was decided In conduct a preliminary carnival within the group and to extend the closing date for the nomination of district candidates to Tuesday, January 28. Nominations must lie in the hands of Mr McGalum by 5 p.m. Candidates so far nominated are: — Miss Tna Heebie (Tuakau). Miss Nonie Reynolds (Bombay-Paparata). Mrs A. Gu'mmer (Pokeno), and Miss Betty Darby (Mangatawhiri). All district committees are to work for their respective candidates, activities to cease on February 17. A monster combined dance has been arranged for February 18 at Tuakau.
