MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FIRST IN THE NEW YEAR GENERAL BUSINESS The Pukekohe Borough Council met for the first time in 1941 on Wednesday evening when there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr John Routly), Messrs G. T. Parvin, P. T. Field, F. J. Morrow, G. 11. Armstrong, \Y. 11. Adams and A. F. Brown, together with the town clerk (Mr W. T. Clieeseman), the engineer (Mr F. 0. Turner) and the foreman (Mr S. J. Clews). Apologies for absence were received from Sergeant R. Biggie and Mr F. W. Stembridge. The Building Controller, Wellington, advised that no local authority was permitted to issue a building permit where the structural work required more than half a ton of structural steel and 11 1 e estimated cost of which exceeded £2OOO unless the consent of the Building Controller had been obtained. Local authorities were asked to furnish monthly copies of all permits issued. —Received. In reply to the council's letter regarding the beautification of the Pukekohe Railway Station platform, the District Engineer of Railways staled that the Department proposed to construct concrete kerb six inches by four inches on the edge of the garden plots with a reasonably smooth top to permit the passage of a lawn mower. —Regret was expressed that the department did not include the amount of rental on the deed of agreement, although “one peppercorn” was said to be the “amount.” In view of this completion of the documents was deferred until the "amount” was stipulated. Mr .lames Itunniford wrote tendering his resignation as borough turncock. and thanked the council for the consideration shown him during his prolonged illness. —In moving that the resignation be accepted, and Mr Hunniford thanked for his 19 years’ service to the borough, the Mayor said the council always regarded Mr Hunniford as a conscientious officer: He expressed the hope that his health would recover sufficiently to enable him to take up some other useful work.- —The motion was carried. Messrs F. Baker, 11. Bilkey and E. Hancock, whose properties were on Beatty's Road in the Franklin County, applied for the borough water to be supplied to their proper! ies.—The matter was referred to the engineer and waterworks committee for an estimate and report on the proposal. An application by the Franklin Agri-cultural-and Pastoral Society for the use of the borough, steam roller on show days for healing water, was granted under the usual conditions. The Health Inspector, Mr R. .1. McGee. reported having carried out J 9 sanitary inspections, all of which proved satisfactory. One sample of milk complied with the regulations while a sample of water had proved satisfactory.

Accounts amounting to £J92.‘5 7s 2d were passed for payment. The nett, deliil of Hie district fund account at January lb was £6IBB 9s Bd.
