MATERNITY HOME
POSITION AT PAPAKURA COUNCIL SKICKS A SUBSIDY LICENSE FOR FOUR BEDS It was disclosed at a recent meeting of the Papalcura Borough Council that there was a distinct possibility of tlie maternity hospital in Green Street closing owing to heavy cost of keeping the institution _ going. The council decided to move in the matter and a conference was recently held comprising the two local doctors, a representative of the Health Department, the Rev. W. C. Wood of the Hospital Board and the Mayor and a member of the Borough Council. As a result of this conference the council decided at its meeting this week to apply to the Hospital Board l'or a license for four beds and a subsidy as liberal as it was possible to make it. The Mayor, Mr S. Evans, pointed out at the council meeting that the maternity home, which was equipped with seven beds, could take in 182 patients a year, but only 72 were dealt with. Notwithstanding this, the Sister in charge was obliged to maintain a staff necessary for seven beds although all were not actually required. Mr Evans said it would be a calamity for the district if the home were to close owing to lack of support. If a subsidy was granted it could carry on.
