Little Effect
SCANDINAVIAN WAR DOMINION'S TRADE FEW GOODS CONCERNED The extension of the war north into Scandinavia and the mining by the Allies of access to the Baltic Sea, Denmark and Sweden should not seriously affect New Zealand’s commerce. The minefields, extending from Bergen, Norway, in the north to the Zuider Zee in I lie south effectively cut off access to Denmark, Sweden and all the Baltic. Even if it is possible for neutral ships to pass this barrier, the Germans’ possession of Denmark will paralyse trade Allied countries and the Baltic States by sea. The Dominion’s trade with these States is not great but there are lines which, if they have not already been affected by the war, will undoubtedly be so now. Timber and paper were formerly obtained from Scandinavia in fairly large quantities, also articles manufactured from these materials, such as stationery. Dairy Machinery Dairying machinery manufactured in Sweden formerly found a market in Ntw Zealand but supplies can be procured from U.S.A. and Great Britain. Special steels and various other inetah: and ores also came from Sweden. From Denmark came a small supply of agricultural machinery. Hardware was supplied by Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, but England and America have in the past been the principal source. From Norway, Denmark and Sweden New Zealand bought various foodstuffs. The man who has enjoyed the luxury of a Danish cheese will now liava to turn to the New Zealand product. Fish in various forms -was imported from Norway. Denmark and Swedefi. Denmark formerly competed in the New Zealand market with rennet. Sweden supplied confectionery. Sports materials were provided by Sweden and Denmark. From Sweden also came films and general photographic materials and optical, surgical and scientific instruments. It will be seen from this list that sb far as imports go. New Zealand will generally notice little effect, save in paper. Exports to Scandinavia are few.
