Hunting the German Submarines: British destroyers day and night patrol the seas searching for enemy submarines. They carry depth charges — drums full of high explosive, which will destroy a submarine completely if dropped within a few hundred feet, and disable it over a much greater distance. In this photograph the sailors are lowering the depth charge into position for discharging at the enemy when necessary.
