PAPAKURA COUNCIL MEETS DEPUTY-MAYOR PRESiDES The Papakura Borough Council was presided over by Hm deputy-Mayor (Mr H. Montgomerie) in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor Mr S. Evans) from the district. Those present were: Messrs D. .1. Graham, C. B. Bryant. I. G. Alack, W. G. Ahirkwick, ,1. S. de Alonf.dk, A. Burgess and D. AlcKenzie. together with the town clerk (Air A. Fighting services welfare: An application from fighting services organisations for a street collect!* n on March 15 was granted. Alanukau centenary publication : The council decided to give its hearty y-. proval of Air Eric Bennett’s Manuk" y centenary pubiicn ßon.
Traffic ■ control matters: Arising oui of suggestions made by the traffic officer (Mr AY. Wilson) the council instructed the foreman to try out various methods of defining street crossings and decided that the silent policemen at the intersection of Averill street and Great South Road and at the corner of Broadway and Railway street west-be removed. Noxious Weeds Act: A letter was received from the Municipal Association of New Zealand regarding the administration of the Noxious Weeds Act. Air Graham moved that the communication he handed to the Noxious Weeds inspector for investigation. The letter, after being perused by (lie Inspector is to be passed on to the works committee.
Request granted: With reference to a charge of £2 IDs made by the council for breaking-in ground at the cemetery for a returned soldier, the Franklin Returned Soldiers' Associalion requesled that the charge be remitted. the case being described as a very needy one. The request was granted on the motion of the DeputyAlayor, seconded by Air A. Burgess. Subdivision Approved: The subdivision of Mr E. Beggs’ properly was approved subject lo the frontages being found in order. Prince Edward Park: Authority was given the ■ reserves committee to prepare and sow grass on the track. The slot meter for the llood light is to be removed.
Rest room frontage: The land immediately in front of the rest room memorial is to be clug up and sown in grass. Shelter for sexton: A recommendation to provide a canvas shelter for the sexton at the cemetery was approved. Warning notices: Three notice hoards warning the public against bathing at Young's beach are to be erected. Penalty on rates unpaid: The De-puty-Mayor moved and Mr dc Montalk seconded that the Id per cent penalty he added to all current rates remaining unpaid after March 22. —Carried. Water reticulation: The proposal to relay the main in Elliot! and Green streets to Wood street was referred to the legal and finance committee for consideration. In the meantime enquiries are to be made relative to the supply of the necessary pipes. Ragwort and gorse: An offer by Mr Bales to treat ragwort on the catchment area with sodium chlorate was accepted. The noxious weeds inspector was asked to have (lie gorse liodire in Marne road trimmed.
