Sea Erosion at Manukau Beaches
REMOVAL OF SAND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY COUNTY COUNCIL CONCERNED “The removal of sand from beaches on the Manukau is morally wrong,” said the engineer (Mr A. C. Bettany), at the meeting of the Franklin County Council on Monday. “It will take about a hundred years to replace the amount removed. These beaches are the right of the people of Franklin. One could not, imagine the people of Auckland countenancing the removal of sand from Takapuna or Milford beaches,” he added. Til is .statement was prompted by applications for repairs to a wharf at Graham’s beach and the road at McLarin’s beach, Gienbrook. Similar matters have been before Hie council on previous occasions and have been taken up with the Auckland Harbour Board. In a letter to the county solicitor (Mr M. R. Grierson), the Auckland Harbour Board solicitors gave particulars of an agreement between the hoard and a firm of contractors. It was decided lo ask the Harbour •Board to effect the extension of the wharf as required, and to take the matter up again and see if the removal of sand could be stopped. Mr M. .1. Hatton sugegsted that when dealing with such matters small committees be appointed to make enquiries and report to the council. Mr H. P. Garland: Mr Hatton is new to the job and we must make allowances for him. It is our practice for committees to enquire into many matters' coming before, the council.
