DRIVERS’ LICENCE FEES TRANSPORT DEPARTMENT’S SHARE Proposals whereby a portion of the fees received from the issue of drivers’ licences would be paid to the Transport Department were considered at Monday’s meeting of the Franklin County Council. The proposals were brought toiwoivl by the N.Z. Counties’ Association which had been in consultation with the Minister. The chairman, Mr ■). N. Massey, M.P., stated that after some discussion the Counties’ Association had recommended that up to 25 per cent of the fees be handed over to the ’transport Department in view of the tarn easing work in traffic control undertaken by that department. Since that meeting the Minister had suggested that one-third be the allocation. Approximately £026 was collected annually by the Franklin County Council. He pointed out that the Minister had power, if he wished, to take all monies received and that the council should agree to 33 1-3 per cent being taken and ask what additional assistance the Department would give. it was suggested that the Department assist in the testing of new drivers in order to relieve the depleted engineering staff for ordinary woik. After discussion it was decided to reluctantly agree to pay 33 1-3 per cent of drivers’ licence fees to the Transport Department.
