Champion Lady Swimmer Last evening’s carnival arranged by the Pukekohe Swimming' Club was a success. One of the attractions was the appearance of Miss R. Stackpole, lady champion at Parnell. Miss Stac-k----1 e is the holder of the Auckland provincial free style 220 yards championship and the 100 yards backstroke championship. She is also the holder of I lie New Zealand record senior 220 yaids backstroke lime record. Last, evening Miss Stackpole gave demonstrations of free, style, and backstroke swimming and diving, for which she received rounds of applause.. There is a chance that Miss Stackpole and others from Auckland will lie presen l at Saturday’s carnival.
Haymaking Still in Progress. Although the season is well advanced, haymaking is still taking place in several parts of the Franklin county. i Tonight’s Sports. j The Franklin Amateur Athletic and ; Cycling Club will conduct another ' sports fixture at Bledisloe Park this evening. Jasper Calder, Auckland, city missioner, has consented to adi dress the Pukekohe Men’s BrotherI hood at its next luncheon on March fe. During his visit, Mr Calder, who is keenly interested in entomology, will be the guest of Pukekones entomologist, Mr D. McCready Armstrong. Borough Council Representatives. The Mayor (Mr John Routly) and Messrs F. W. Stembridge and R. Diggle, have been nominated by the Pukekobe Borough Council to represent the borough on the district committee. to be set up under the Physical Welfare Act. An Abomination onR-he Roads. Motor cycles were described as ‘‘death traps and an abomination on the roads,” by a councillor at last week’s meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council, when , a letter was received from the Commissioner of Transport asking for the council’s views on a proposal to restrict speeds of motor cycles. The matter was referred to the works committee. The Kelvinator Refrigerator. The secretary of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society, Mr G. R. Basham, stated yesterday that during both days of the show £73 worth of tickets in the raffle for ihe Kelvinator refrigerator had been sold by Jiis office staff. The value of tickets sold altogether represents a much larger amount as a number of-books of tickets have been sold by other sellers. New Justices of the Peace. Messrs L. C. Logan and A. R Hodgson of Pultekawa, have been gazetted Justices of the Peace. Mr Logan Is a member of the Raglan County Council, chairman of the Tuakau-Onewhero branch and a vice-president of the Franklin Returned Soldiers’ Association and a member of the executive of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Society. Proposed Parking Area. A suggestion by the Pukekohe branch of the Farmers’ Union that the borough council provide a car parking area adjacent to King street, was before the council last week. It was decided to reply stating that the council was considering the matter and its decision would be communicated to the union later. A further suggestion that the car parking area be known as Pukekohe’s centennial memorial, was ' “received” .without comment. Saturday’s Swimming Carnival. To conclude physical fitness week, the Pukekohe Swimming Club has arranged a monster carnival for Saturday next. A comprehensive programme has been arranged and includes events for all swimmers. Entries close at 5 p.m. on Friday with Mr N. G. Winter. The programme is advertised on page 1. It is quite possible that Miss R. Stackpole and other Auckland swimmers will be pre- . sent, to give exhibitions. R.S.A. Picnic. Tlie Patumahoe branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association held its annual picnic at Clark's Beacli recently, there being a big attendance, including visitors from Waiuku, Papakura and Pukekohe. A comprehensive and varied programme was arranged. The R.S.A. handicap was v'on by Martin Brooke. The children enjoyed fruit and lollie scrambles, while the ex-servicemen indulged in a number of popular games.
