They Worked Union Hours
Two Berok apes have been placed on the pay roll of the Government botanical department in Singapore, Straits Settlements, recently, because of their usefulness in gathering mangoes, coconuts, and other fruits. Later, others will he added. Officials recommended the pair for their charm and cheapness as well as their ability to collect fruits without damaging them. To the botanists they are Jambul and Puteh, caught by a member of the department when they were so small they could both sit in one hand of their captor. They are learning the Malayan language, and already understand / about 2fi words of the local dialect.
