Annual Bull Sales at Pukekohe

GOOD PRICES REALISED LAST WEEK’S OFFERING A large attendance of buyers, representative of North Auckland, Franklin, the Waikato and Hauraki Plains districts were present at the annual bull sale conducted by Alfred Buckland and Sons, Ltd., at Pukekohe on Friday. More than 200 bulls were yarded and bidding .was keen throughout. Values in most cases were well above the vendors’ expectations. Practically a total clearance was effected with good two and three-year-old herd bulls in especially good demand. The top price for Shorthorns was 26 guineas, this being for a good quality yearling pedigree Milking Shorthorn bull which was offered on account of Mr John McGowan of Waiuku. The buyer was Mr D. P. Clarke of Hikutaia. Two other Shorthorn yearlings from the same vendor, which were purchased by Mr E. K. Wright of Patumahoe and Mr G. F. Gummer of Runciman, realised 25 and 22J guineas respectively. A yearling Shorthorn offered on behalf of Messrs P'egler and Son, Paerata, was bought for 23 guineas by Messrs Martin Bros., Woodcocks. A line of yearling Shorthorns from Mr P. Dunn, Ararimu, made from 164 to 18 guineas. Other values for Shorthorns were as follows : •> Best yearling pedigree bulls, 164 to 26 guineas; other yearling pedigree bulls, 8 to 14 guineas; good grade herd bulls, 10 to 15 guineas; grade yearling bulls, 9 to 12 guineas. A large entry of Jersey bulls was also offered. The top price, 21 guineas, was paid for a pedigree yearling which was offered on account of Mrs M, M. Johnson, Mauku. The buyer was Mr Ivor Barriball, Pukekohe. A two-year-old pedigree bull offered on account of Mr T. Brownlee, Pukekohe, also realised 21 guineas. The buyer was Mr J. P. Clark, Waiau Pa. A two-year-old from Mr W. A. Grant, Bombay, was bought for 204 guineas by Mr W. J. Kane, Onewhero, while a rising two-year-old, offered on account of Mr R. D. Kerr, Onewhero, was bought for 20 guineas by Mr W. Douglas, Waiuku. The range for Jerseys was as follows: —Best two-year-old pedigree bulls, 16 to 21 guineas; best yearling pedigree bulls, 16 to 21 guineas; other yearlings, 9 to 15 guineas; best grade herd bulls, 11 to 15 guineas; other grade herd bulls, 8 to 10 guineas: grade yearling bulls, 7 to 10 guineas: small and poorly-con-ditioned bulls, 3 to 5 guineas.

A large entry of pedigree and grades came forward at the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company Limited’s annual bull sale which took place at Pukekohe yesterday. There was a good attendance of buyers from all over the Franklin, Manulcau and Raglan counties and competition for animals with good butterfat backing was spirited. Jerseys and Shorthorns were in keener request than Friesians, the entry of Friesians being small. The top price of the sale was 294 guineas realised for a two-year-old pedigree Jersey sold on account of Airs. M. Macllveen of Taupaki, and bought by Mr W. D. Ballard, of Run}; ciman. A three-year-old pedigree Jersey on account of Mr \V. Holmes; of Ramarama, was purchased-by Mr Hr Dell of Pukekohe, for ‘29 guineas* Other two and three-year-old realised prices ranging from lOgns to 16gns, with yearlings at from 4gns to llJgns. The best price for Shorthorns was 20gns for a yearling pedigree offered no account of Mr John McGowan, of Waiuku. The buyer was Mr J. Thomas, of Opuatia. A line of four yearlings from Messrs Pegler and Son, of Paerata, made from lligns to 20gns. Two and three-year-old Shorthorns sold at from 84 gns to ligns. A two-year-old pedigree Friesian bull, offered on account of Mr A. E. B. Richardson, of Paerata, was purchased by Mr T. Medhurst, of Bombay, for lOgns. Practically a total clearance resulted.
